BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – At least 4 people have lost their lives, and many others were injured in a mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, according to the police. Officer Truman Fitzgerald reported that “multiple shooters opened fire on a group of people” late Saturday night in the city’s Five Points South area.
Police arrived at the scene to find the bodies of two men and one woman, while a fourth person later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Investigators are currently working to determine whether the shooters approached the victims on foot or from a passing vehicle. So far, no arrests have been made.
Five Points South is a popular nightlife district in Birmingham, adding to the community’s shock. Speaking about the injured, Officer Fitzgerald shared that “dozens of people have been wounded, and at least four of them are in life-threatening condition.”
According to the Gun Violence Archive, this tragic event adds to the more than 400 mass shootings that have occurred across the U.S. so far this year. The Archive defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people are either injured or killed.
Police suspect that Glock switches were involved. These devices, which convert handguns into machine guns, have been a key focus in recent federal crackdowns in Birmingham.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. Birmingham police have also requested that local businesses share any available surveillance footage and are asking the public to come forward with any helpful details.
