He hinted at the news earlier with a post on his Instagram account.

“The psychological assumption automatically provides the means to fulfill the dream desire,” Rose wrote.

Derrick Rose, who played for the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Detroit Pistons, also placed ads in the newspapers of these cities, writing a tribute to basketball.

The Bulls posted a tribute video to Rose on the team’s account on X (formerly Twitter).

Derrick Rose, who was the top pick in the 2008 NBA draft, quickly proved himself as one of the best and most exciting players in the league. At just 20 years old, he earned the Rookie of the Year Award while playing for the Bulls. The next season, he made his first appearance as an All-Star. The three-time All-Star averaged 17.4 points, 5.2 assists and 3.2 rebounds over 723 career appearances.

In 2011, Rose had a major breakthrough and became the youngest player ever to win the MVP award in the league’s history.

However, his promising career took a tough turn when injuries slowed him down, allowing him to play only 39 games in the 2011-12 season. In the first round of the playoffs that year, Rose tore his ACL, causing him to miss the entire 2012-13 season.

Rose came back from his injury, but he wasn’t the same player. Over the rest of his NBA career, he played for five different teams. Later on, he found a new role as a key player coming off the bench for the Timberwolves, Pistons, and Knicks.

“Basketball was and always will be my first love,” Rose told NBA Insider Chris Haynes. “As a teenager, I had a goal of becoming an NBA player, and I achieved that. This isn’t a goodbye to the game I love; it’s a thank you.”

Rose played 24 games last season for the Grizzlies, where he averaged 8.0 points, 3.3 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per game. He was supposed to earn $3.4 million in the 2024-25 season, which was the last year of his contract. However, the Grizzlies agreed to let him go from his contract earlier this week, as per his request.
